Ireland is a place that, for me, is either on the way to or from somewhere else and I just got back from my 8th trip to this fantastic country of history, castles and ruins and churches and beer! Lots of beers! And whiskey! And incredibly friendly people!
This watercolour was from a photo I took after a rain had run its course and the sky was pushing its way through the clouds making bright, wonderful reflections on the street below. I was trying to get some effects and got frustrated with my progress when my wife called me up for lunch. With a bit of pigment left in a damp brush and on a damp page I made some some, what Alvaro Castagnet once told me (in a class in Vancouver) were “Spanish swirls” in frustration. I went upstairs to eat and come down to my “studio” (a small cluttered office on our ground floor) to see that the water and pigment and gravity had done their thing which is often the case with watercolour. I called it at first my “F-bomb” painting because that’s what I muttered as I went for lunch leaving the painting to do its thing. On my first art show at my home a few months later this was the first original sold - who knew?
